Mount Etna

If volcanoes are your thing then Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe and the oldest recorded active volcano in the world, is a must-see. There are several ways to visit Mount Etna including guided jeep tours, a cable car (funivia) tour or you can hike or ride. The Funivia dell'Etna runs a cable car from the Rifugio Sapienza up the mountain to about 8,200 feet (2,500 meters).

Hundreds of wineries sit in the shadow of Mount Etna, thanks to its rich volcanic soil, the Etna wine DOC was the first given in Sicily a testament to the excellent wine making. Most of the best wineries to visit in Etna are terraced and sit between 1600-4000 feet above sea level.

Food and wine tours of Mount Etna include various wine tastings (it’s interesting to see how the change in landscape on the different slopes of the volcano affects the taste in the wine) and visiting the vineyards. Visit a traditional butcher shop in Etna and watch them prepare sausages using an ancient recipe, hand chopping the pork with a cleaver.

Our concierge can arrange bespoke tours to Mount Etna as well as tastings of exceptional wines.
